Sixth Form

Phoenix has a vibrant, lively and successful Sixth Form. You will get a warm, friendly welcome from our 250 students.

Whilst the majority of our Year 11 students automatically move into our sixth form, significant numbers of students are joining us from other local schools or colleges.

16-19 Study Programme
The principles upon which the individual programmes of all sixth form learners are developed ensure that we fully meet the requirements of 16-19 study programmes.

The over-riding criteria governing the development of each learner’s programme of study is to maximise progression to the next stage of their education, employment or an apprenticeship.

Study programmes are tailored to individuals but will typically combine the following elements:

  1. Substantial academic, applied or vocational qualifications that stretch students and link clearly to training, employment and/or higher education.
  2. English and mathematics where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade 4 (reformed grading) or grade C (legacy grading).
  3. Work experience to give them the opportunity to develop their career choices and to apply their skills in real working conditions.
  4. Other non-qualification activity to develop their character, skills, attitudes and confidence, and to support progression.

At Phoenix we have a strong pastoral team, Sixth Form Learning Mentor and Connexions Careers Advisor who are there to support students every step of the way.

Phoenix also offers the 16-19 Bursary Fund, a scheme to help young people facing financial hardship stay on in full time education after Year 11. There are limited funds allocated to the school by the Education Funding Agency (EFA). The Bursary Fund is a discretionary grant with criteria set by the school and linked to attendance, behaviour and progress - please see document below for further information.

In the Sixth Form students are part of a successful, happy and thriving community. They leave with a combination of excellent academic and personal qualifications.  Each year 70% of our Year 13 pupils progress on to university with many going to Russell Group universities to study a range of subjects from medicine, to business management. Our extensive Information, Advice, Guidance and Enrichment Programme ensures all pupils are fully prepared for their next stage of their journey be it work,  apprenticeships or further study.
